Chapter 16: They're All Liars

January 17, 2020 · 4 min read · 725 words

Flashes of white light sparked across the bustling square of as figures materialized one after another — the resurrected members of Shadow.

Their faces were grim, suffused with bitter dejection.

Nothing compared to the anguish of having something in your grasp, only to lose it.

Just moments ago they'd been dreaming of dominating Red Leaf Town, of rocketing through levels. Now they'd all died and respawned — stripped of levels, their skill proficiencies gutted, and their accumulated first-level experience somehow even worse than what a regular player would have.

The respawned Yan Hu looked like death warmed over, his expression dark enough to kill.

System: Player Night Edge has killed you. You will respawn in Red Leaf Town in 3 seconds. Your level will decrease by 1. All skill proficiencies will decrease by 100 points.

"Night Edge — I'm not letting this go! I swear I'll make you wish you were dead!" Staring at the system log, Yan Hu bellowed so loudly that other players scattered, unwilling to meet the eyes of that lunatic.

After venting for a while, Yan Hu ordered everyone to check their inventories and see what they'd dropped.

Dying once was a heavy loss, but farming goblins had yielded experience and loot too — the one silver lining. At least the time hadn't been completely wasted.

Yan Hu opened his inventory and felt a bitter taste rise in his throat. Blood sprayed from his mouth.

"We're going to Dark Moon Valley right now — this instant! I'm killing that bastard if it's the last thing I do!" he roared, fury blazing beyond all limits.

The skill book he'd planned to taunt with was gone — an incredibly rare swordsman skill, the most valuable drop from the entire goblin farm, and now it had vanished.

But what was truly unforgivable was that the book had ended up in Shi Feng's hands. In the end, he, Yan Hu, had done all the hard work for Shi Feng's benefit alone! That was something he could never tolerate. Even reducing Shi Feng back to level zero wouldn't be enough to quell the hatred burning inside him.

The other members had no idea what had gotten into Yan Hu. Going after Shi Feng now would be pointless — nobody would be foolish enough to stand around waiting for revenge. He'd already slipped away, no doubt laughing at them from somewhere.

Just then, Yan Hu's communicator chimed.

"Who is it?! How dare you bother me right now — you looking to die?!" Yan Hu snarled the moment he picked up.

"Yan Hu — haven't seen you for a day and your temper's really grown, hasn't it?" The voice on the other end was ice-cold, seething with anger.

Yan Hu recognized the voice instantly, and when he matched it to a person, his expression turned as ugly as it could possibly be. "Brother Zhang — it's you? I was just disciplining the guys. I didn't expect you to reach out. Brother Zhang, please don't take it the wrong way — I wasn't talking about you!"

"Save it. I know everything. Look at the mess you've made — this is what you've turned Shadow into in Red Leaf Town? I'm heading over there now. From this point on, you're no longer the Red Leaf Town squad leader. Elementalist Wusheng Yu from the main team will take over temporarily. If I arrive and you still haven't reached level two — get lost. Shadow doesn't need dead weight."

Yan Hu deflated like a punctured balloon. His hatred for Shi Feng — not all the oceans in the world could wash it away.

Meanwhile, in Dark Moon Valley, Shi Feng and were picking up the loot dropped by the Shadow members.

Shi Feng held Yan Hu's skill book in his hands.

"That Yan Hu — generous guy, leaving something like this for me." Without a word, Shi Feng chose to learn it.

Gale Blade. Action type. Requires a sword. Launch a rushing attack against an enemy within 5–30 yards. Movement speed increases by 40% while charging toward the target; attack speed increases by 20% for 3 seconds. Cooldown: 25 seconds. Level: 1. Proficiency: 0/300.

With this skill, a swordsman's mobility increased dramatically — a strong counter against rangers and mages who liked to kite from range.
