"Dr. Gao stayed in that room for a night before Door Nan moved in?"
"Yeah, isn't that weird? He's got several properties in Jiujiang, so why would he go out of his way to stay in a run-down apartment building?"
Zhang Li's words put Chen Ge on alert. The first person to notice something was off with Door Nan was Dr. Gao, and the one who looked after Door Nan was also Dr. Gao. All of this could very well be a scheme laid out by Dr. Gao himself.
The reason Door Nan had ended up in such a remote apartment building in the first place was because he'd seen a post on the university campus forum. Now that he thought about it, that post was also highly suspicious.
"Nobody from Haiming Apartments would go out of their way to post on the medical school's forum. That post was probably made by Dr. Gao." Chen Ge walked out of the room and headed to the third floor. "But why would Dr. Gao do something like this? What does he want to get from Door Nan's secondary personality?"
After going back and forth over it, Chen Ge figured the only thing about Door Nan's secondary personality that could possibly attract Dr. Gao was its connection to the primary personality.
With the Supernatural Spirit Society at the height of its power, they could have easily killed Door Nan's primary personality, but they hadn't done so. They'd merely put the primary personality to sleep.
"Could Dr. Gao be researching how to control a Door Opener?" Chen Ge replayed the conversations between Dr. Gao and Door Nan in his mind. "If Dr. Gao really is Number Ten of the Supernatural Spirit Society, does Door Nan's primary personality know about it?"
Chen Ge wanted to complete the trial mission in the Underground Morgue, but his own strength wasn't quite enough. It would be great if he could drag Door Nan into this, since the primary personality was also a Red-clothed ghost.
"Whether Dr. Gao is the president of the Supernatural Spirit Society or not, I can use this to win Door Nan over. He shouldn't want to see his secondary personality fall into the hands of a mortal enemy, either."
With that decided, Chen Ge prepared to make another trip to the Third Ward tonight.
"Zhang Li, you have to get me the map of the Underground Morgue as soon as possible. This thing is extremely important." Chen Ge was about to leave after giving his instructions when his phone suddenly rang. He glanced down and saw it was a call from Li Zheng.
"Do you want me to step out?" Zhang Li was tactful enough.
"No need." Chen Ge answered the call right in front of Zhang Li. "Captain Li, what's up?"
"Dr. Gao is the most cautious and cunning opponent I've encountered in all my years on the force! He must have caught wind of our plan. Two hours ago, he left Jiujiang."
"He left? Are you sure?" Dr. Gao leaving Jiujiang was good news for Chen Ge — it meant one less variable when he went to tackle the Underground Morgue trial mission.
"Why do I detect a hint of excitement in your voice?" Li Zheng was a bit exasperated. Dr. Gao's sudden departure was like winding up for a punch only to hit empty air.
"His leaving Jiujiang right now just proves he's got a guilty conscience. Looks like he's scared." Chen Ge said this aloud, but his real intention was to take advantage of this window to enter the Underground Morgue and complete the mission.
"You have no idea what's going on. Over the past few days of investigation, we've uncovered more and more problems with Dr. Gao." Li Zheng lowered his voice. "There's nobody else around you, is there?"
"What's going on?"
"According to our investigation, Dr. Gao may be connected to multiple murder cases. He wasn't a direct participant, but his shadow looms behind those cases to varying degrees."
"Multiple?" Chen Ge clung to his last shred of hope and asked, "Is there any chance he's being framed?"
"With his level of intelligence, I'd say the only person in all of Jiujiang who could outsmart him is himself." A note of helplessness crept into Li Zheng's voice. "I can't deny that he's an outstanding doctor, but while he's a doctor, he's also a deeply hidden madman. There's some information I can't go into with you. The main reason I'm calling is to let you know — be ready to make contact with Gao Ruxue tomorrow night. I'll also be sending you some files. You'd better take a look at them."
