Chapter 320. Sacrifice!

January 17, 2020 · 3 min read · 539 words

"One body, two lives lost. The entire village said the woman was cursed. They gathered several able-bodied young men to dig open the well and retrieve the corpse."

"But then something strange happened. The woman had jumped in headfirst, yet when they had dug halfway down, someone saw the female corpse's face tilt upward."

"A deathly white face, swollen from the water, eyes bulging out, staring straight at the men digging the well."

"The young men by the well were terrified—they'd all done something they felt guilty about—and none of them dared continue digging."

"But leaving the body in the well wasn't an option. The village chief consulted with the dead woman's family and pooled money to hire someone to dig."

"The next day, when they returned to the well, the body that had been head-up was now feet-up, as if she were trying to burrow deeper into the well."

"Those who saw it reported to the village chief. To calm everyone's nerves, the old chief said the digging had disturbed the underground water veins and the body had simply slipped downward."

"Nobody believed that explanation. When they checked again on the third day, the villagers discovered that the body in the well had vanished!"

"The village had four wells—east, west, south, and north—all built above the same underground river. Now that the body was gone, who knew which well it might surface from."

"After that, strange things kept happening one after another. The woman had jumped into the western well, so many people tried to avoid her by drawing water from the eastern well."

"The water from that well looked perfectly fine when it was first drawn, but after cooking with it, people would find long strands of women's hair in their food."

"About a week later, the person living near the well heard a rushing sound coming from inside it at night, as though something were crawling up along the well wall."

"He crouched below the window to take a look, and caught sight of a red figure climbing out of the well!"

"The next day, everyone discovered that the woman's husband had died in his own bedroom."

"The husband had been deformed—his face and arms were both malformed. When he died, his head had been stuffed into a water bucket, and the cause of death appeared to be drowning."

"The village was gripped with panic. The old chief gathered everyone together and wanted to send for a half-immortal from beyond the mountains. But before the half-immortal could arrive, the village's livestock began dying en masse."

"Some people, too frightened to stay, fled the village with their entire families."

"But what was truly horrifying was that after a day and a night, all those who had fled were found tossed into the valley at the village entrance, each killed in a different manner."

"It seemed that anyone who had drunk the well water would be hunted down and killed no matter how far they ran."

"The villagers lived in constant fear, too preoccupied to build coffins. They simply buried the dead where they fell."

"Running meant certain death; staying meant no chance of survival. The villagers tried every possible method, but nothing could stop that female ghost."
