Chapter 4507: The Test

January 17, 2020 · 5 min read · 1,048 words

After wandering around the Pill Hall for a while longer, finally took his leave. Hua Rong followed alongside him with the ease of an old acquaintance, sticking to him like glue.

had originally planned to head down the mountain and take a stroll through Xuandan City, but he'd lost all interest in that now. This Hua Rong talked far too much—her constant chatter was driving him up the wall—so he simply decided to head straight back.

Hua Rong watched longingly as he walked toward the Welcoming Peak of the Xuandan Sect, stopping halfway up the mountain. She didn't dare wander freely any higher than that, so she kept waving and calling out to him: "Yang Pill Master, whenever you've made up your mind, come find me! I'll be waiting right here!"

pretended not to hear.

Back at his quarters in the Welcoming Hall, he instructed the serving girl to notify him immediately if any news came, and then shut himself indoors for the next several days.

It wasn't until three days later, as dusk was settling in, that Gao Xinpeng hurried over. The two exchanged pleasantries as always, and after they'd sat down, Gao Xinpeng finally said: "Junior Brother, prepare yourself tonight. Tomorrow the Elder Council will arrange your examination."

"Understood!" agreed. He'd long known this day would come, but now that it was actually here, he couldn't help feeling a twinge of anxiety. What if something went wrong and his cover was blown?

Then again, he reasoned, even if his cover was blown, it wasn't the end of the world. At worst, he could fight his way out. His strength wasn't low—though Spirit Stage experts might be involved, if his goal was simply to escape, he still had a decent chance. The only ones who'd truly suffer would be the .

Gao Xinpeng had come personally just to deliver this news. Afterward, he chatted with for a while before taking his leave, telling him simply to wait calmly tomorrow—someone would come to guide him to the examination site.

The night passed without incident. The next morning, rose early, freshened up, and sat quietly in wait.

When the sun had climbed well above the horizon, a voice suddenly rang out from beyond his door: "Where is ?"

stepped outside at the sound and immediately saw a middle-aged man standing quietly beyond the entrance, his sharp gaze sweeping toward like that of a hawk.

Spirit Stage! 's heart stirred. Though this man leaked no aura whatsoever, keenly sensed that he was a Spirit Stage cultivator—he simply couldn't tell what level.

"I am . And you are…?" asked politely.

The man gave a slight nod. "I am a Blood Servant of the Sect Master, sent by order to escort you. Follow me." He did not offer his name.

"I appreciate it," said courteously, inwardly noting that the Xuandan Sect truly took this matter seriously—sending out the Sect Master's own Blood Servant.

The man wasted no more words. His figure flickered, and he was suddenly standing beside . Spiritual energy surged forth, enveloping the two of them, and they shot skyward, hurtling off toward the distance.

Though this was 's first time flying through the air in this Divine Weapon World—and being carried at that—this kind of aerial travel was nothing new to him, so he felt no particular panic. The Blood Servant, however, glanced at with a flicker of surprise, seemingly astonished by his composure.

Before long, a spirit peak appeared ahead, crowned with a sprawling complex of palace buildings. The Blood Servant brought straight down before one of the palaces and gestured with his hand. "Go on in yourself."

"Thank you," cupped his fists, cast a glance toward the palace, straightened his robes, and strode forward.

The grand doors of the palace stood wide open, and walked straight through. He'd expected to find the Xuandan Sect's entire leadership waiting inside, ready to oversee his examination. Instead, the great hall was utterly empty—not a soul in sight, the entire space hollow and bare.

Before he could even process this, the doors slammed shut behind him with a thunderous boom.

's eyes narrowed slightly. He kept his guard up as he scanned his surroundings.

Though no one was visible, he could feel it—in the hidden dark, pairs of eyes watched him with curiosity. Candlelight flickered all around, illuminating the hall.

soon spotted a pill furnace at the center of the hall, and along one side stood a shelving rack loaded with all manner of medicinal herbs.

A voice abruptly echoed through the hall from every direction: "A pill furnace has been prepared for you. Subterranean fire can be drawn here. The rack over there holds various medicinal ingredients. Select what you need and refine a batch of Ten-Revolution Heartless Pills!"

Hearing this, much of the worry in 's heart dissipated. It seemed Gao Xinpeng had been right—the recipe he possessed was the best proof of his identity, and this test was indeed the refinement of Ten-Revolution Heartless Pills.

He answered respectfully: "Yes!"

He turned and walked toward the rack, searching for the ingredients he needed.

There were far more herbs here than needed for a single batch of Ten-Revolution Heartless Pills—their abundance was clearly part of the test itself.

But had long since committed the recipe to memory. Selecting what he needed from this collection was no challenge at all.

He quickly had everything prepared and stepped before the pill furnace.

In an adjacent side hall, four or five white-haired elders stood in quiet observation. These were all high-ranking members of the Xuandan Sect, and the one at the center was none other than the Sect Master himself, Baili Yunsang—one of the finest Spirit Pill Masters in the Divine Weapon World. The other elders were all Spirit Pill Masters as well.

Though separated by a wall, the view from the side hall into the main hall where stood was completely unobstructed—every detail was laid bare. From 's side, however, nothing was visible at all.
