Life never ceases, and neither does the slaughter.
Yang Kai stood alone outside the city's grand protective formation, yet like an invincible God of Death, he blocked the Demon Race's iron torrent. Though he was only one man, the power he wielded was comparable to that of an entire army.
On the city walls, the warriors of Tiger Roar City worked feverishly to repair the breach in the formation. After a frantic effort, they finally managed to restore it.
Lin Tong saw this and called out, "Palace Master Yang, you can pull back now!"
Yang Kai slowly shook his head. "I'm afraid that's no longer possible."
As soon as he spoke, his figure blurred and he appeared at another location — where the formation had just been cracked open by the Demon Race once more. Had Yang Kai not had the foresight to dash over and fill the gap in advance, the swarming demons would have surely poured into the city.
The situation replayed itself just as before. The Demon army frantically surged toward the breach, only to be stopped cold by Yang Kai alone with his hammer, unable to advance a single step while leaving behind countless corpses and suffering devastating casualties.
Behind Yang Kai, the warriors who had been repairing the formation rushed over to continue their work.
The battlefield was a cacophony of chaos. The Demon Race was savage beyond measure. From the start of the battle to now, barely enough time had passed to drink a cup of tea, yet Tiger Roar City's protective formation had already been endangered twice. Had Yang Kai not descended like a divine warrior, the formation would have been breached long ago.
But how many Yang Kais existed in this world? Though there were a dozen or so Emperor Realm cultivators within the city, none of them dared to charge outside the walls the way Yang Kai did, pitting their flesh and blood against the Demon army's assault. Lin Tong unleashed killing techniques toward the demons while observing the situation, a deep furrow of worry hidden between his brows. As the City Lord of Tiger Roar City, he had already identified their greatest vulnerability — if the Demon army changed its strategy, whether Tiger Roar City could hold today was anyone's guess.
What one fears most is exactly what comes. After a short while, seeing that they could not break through where Yang Kai stood and that the breach had been repaired again, the Demon army suddenly split its forces, rumbling off in several different directions.
At the sight of this, Lin Tong's heart sank. If the Demon army concentrated all its force on a single point, Tiger Roar City still had hope of holding. Yang Kai's performance had been nothing short of spectacular — with him guarding, the formation could not be breached.
But once they split their forces and multiple breaches appeared in the formation, Yang Kai would be stretched impossibly thin. He could not guard every gap at once.
The demons, as it turned out, were no fools. What Lin Tong could see, they could see as well, and now they were putting that into practice.
Moments later, another breach appeared in the formation. Yang Kai flashed over, and had just finished slaughtering the demons that had rushed toward that area when alarmed cries erupted not far away. He looked up to see that another breach had opened in the formation there as well. The demons on that side lit up with excitement and swarmed toward the gap.
Yang Kai sighed inwardly and raised his hand, summoning his Dharma Avatar to remain in place and guard while he himself rushed toward the new breach.
The moment the Dharma Avatar appeared, it began carving a swath of destruction. Standing several zhang tall, its body delivered an overwhelming visual impact — every edge and angle sharply defined, dark flames wreathing its surface, barbs jutting from its back, and a Demon weapon hammer gripped in its hands. It was utterly unstoppable. Each swing of the hammer sent out a rain of blood, and as its Devouring Sky Domain expanded, the demons that swarmed in found thick black energy seeping from their bodies, swallowed clean by the Avatar.
The demons were stunned. This thing was even more formidable than the human from before. No one knew how it had appeared or where it had come from, but it now stood before the city's protective formation like a guardian deity, its defense as solid as an iron wall.
Two breaches, two figures — the Demon Race left behind millions of corpses and still could not gain a single inch.
But the third breach was soon torn open, becoming the Demon army's breakthrough point.
Lin Tong did not hesitate. He rushed over immediately, though he did not dare charge outside the walls the way Yang Kai had. He knew his own limits — though he was also of the Emperor Realm, he was only at the first level. If he ventured outside, he would be swallowed by the Demon army in an instant.
He sensibly stayed within the formation, but with unwavering resolve, he threw his own body into blocking the third breach. A roar erupted from his throat, and Lin Tong's slender frame swelled as if inflated. His upper garments burst apart, muscles bulging high across his body, his entire frame growing taller by several inches. A strange, formidable aura radiated from within him. He produced a massive broadsword even taller than himself, its light radiating brilliantly — clearly an extraordinary weapon.
The broadsword swept out layers of luminous arcs, transforming into a boundless storm of blade shadows. Every demon that pushed through was sliced to pieces.
Ma Yin and the other Emperor Realm cultivators of Tiger Roar City stood nearby, their expressions grim, pouring their own Emperor Qi without reservation to support Lin Tong and hamper the demons' advance.
Fortunately, the formation had not been completely destroyed, and the breaches that had been torn open were not too large — the number of demons that could push through at any one time was limited. Combining the strength of Tiger Roar City's several Emperor Realm cultivators, they could just barely hold the line.
Seeing this, the morale of the city's warriors soared. They unleashed their secret techniques with even greater ferocity, doing everything in their power to reduce the demon horde.
A fourth breach was torn open.
Li Jiao and Gao Xueting followed suit, flashing over to plug the gap. Though only two of them, their defense was even easier to manage than Lin Tong's group.
After all, Li Jiao was a third-level Emperor Realm powerhouse who also carried half-dragon bloodline. His true strength had not quite reached the level of a Pseudo-Emperor, but he was still somewhat stronger than an ordinary third-level Emperor Realm cultivator.
He blocked the breach while Gao Xueting coordinated from the side. No matter how many demons came, they were all slaughtered clean.
On the city walls, those repairing the formation dashed about tirelessly like firefighters rushing from one emergency to the next. Wherever a breach appeared, they had to go fix it — and no sooner had they patched one gap than another location was broken through.
Fortunately, the Demon army was running low on steam as well. If they had managed to tear open one or two more breaches, Tiger Roar City truly would have been unable to hold. Yang Kai and the Dharma Avatar continuously shifted positions, rushing from one breach to the next to stand guard.
