Chapter 1285: A Loophole in the Restrictions

July 18, 2021 · 5 min read · 951 words

In the current era, in this world, belief in gods was universal. The only difference was which deity one believed in. Therefore, even though , , and the others did not understand what the term "Angel" meant in mysticism, they had more or less heard legends about angels from priests, bishops, and the elders around them. They knew that angels were servitors of the gods, powerful beings qualified to be called "He," whose every move could create miracles, and were absolutely beyond the reach of ordinary people.

In the hearts of these four Beyonders, an Angel was a holy spirit from another level, another world. Under normal circumstances, they dwelt in the divine kingdom and did not descend to reality. They could be treated as true legends, and there was no need to consider their practical significance. Just like in the wars they had experienced before, although there were occasional appearances of Beyonders that terrified them even to this day, none of that would ever have made them think of an Angel.

The two weren't even on the same level!

But today, a wandering, mysterious "Magician" told them that the High Priest of the Church of the was an Angel walking the earth.

As for that gentleman who had displayed so many wondrous things, and the others believed him from the bottom of their hearts. For one, he had fulfilled their wishes and was friendly enough. For another, they didn't think they were worthy of being deceived in such matters. To them, whether the High Priest was an Angel or an exceptionally powerful Beyonder made no essential difference.

The truth of this world far exceeds our imagination... The sentence she often said flashed through Pasha's mind once again.

Roy thought of even more.

He remembered that the lady the "Magician" had summoned from the air said she was tracking the High Priest of the Church of the God of War. Furthermore, she seemed qualified to view the oracles of the "Goddess of the Night."

Only another Angel could track an Angel... Judging by the "Magician"'s behavior in front of that lady, his status shouldn't be much lower either... Roy immediately retracted his gaze which was subconsciously fixed on Klein's back, not daring to look him straight in the eyes.

He glanced to his left and right, discovering that Phil seemed to have similar guesses. His face, pale from blood loss, showed an extremely complex emotion.

Byers held his breath for a few seconds before opening his mouth: "No wonder Berldane experienced such an incomprehensible mutation..."

"Now is not the time for lamentations. Hurry, the curfew is about to take effect." Klein reminded them with a laugh, looking completely relaxed.

Pasha quickly glanced at the bulletin board again, imprinting the full content of the curfew in her mind: "...From eight in the evening to eight in the morning, it is strictly forbidden to walk or gather outdoors..."

"Where should we go?" She blurted out.

Under the dual restrictions of the curfew and the crime of trespassing, they seemed to have no choice but to accept punishment.

Klein chuckled. "It only strictly forbids walking and gathering outdoors."

As he spoke, he tapped the manhole cover beside him with his foot.

Byers' eyes lit up. "Right, it doesn't say we can't travel inside the sewers!

"In places where curfews have been imposed previously, the homeless would hide in the sewers or abandoned buildings."

Roy and the others hesitated no longer. They immediately stepped forward, using their strength to push open the manhole cover and climb into the sewer.

In the pitch blackness, a dim yellow light flickered on. Klein now held a lantern in his hand.

As they followed the miraculous "Magician" ahead, Phil said thoughtfully: "Next, we can go to a hotel.

"Byers is a local, he won't be attacked. He can rent a suite, and then we can climb in through the window from outside. Since we have the owner's permission, it won't count as trespassing.

"This way, we can wait until daybreak, when the curfew is automatically lifted."

"A very interesting idea, but our goal isn't just to survive until dawn." Klein responded with a smile, walking ahead with the lantern.

Roy nodded. "If we do nothing and just stay in the hotel, the decrees will increase one by one, becoming so detailed that hotel rooms cannot shelter outsiders."

"Actually, the most interesting part of that proposal is not that it found a loophole in the restrictions, but that it reminded me of something." Klein half-turned, looking at Byers. "As a local resident of Berldane, he has not tried to capture the outsiders."

This meant he wasn't affected by the command on the yellow paper.

"This..." Pasha and the others looked at Byers with slight wariness, their faces undisguisedly showing their confusion.

Their recent experience had confirmed that the citizens of Berldane had lost their minds when it came to capturing outsiders.

"I don't know why either..." Byers murmured, equally confused.

"Are you still a citizen of Berldane?" Klein asked casually as he walked slowly through the damp, foul-smelling sewer.

Byers followed behind him, answering with certainty: "Of course."

Klein said thoughtfully: "On one hand, you are a citizen of Berldane, on the other hand, you are a standard outsider. The two attributes overlap, creating a contradiction. Under that command, you are neither attacked nor affected in terms of your rationality."

"If we can create this kind of 'contradiction,' can we escape the limitations of the rules?" Phil's spirits lifted.

Pasha shook her head: "But this kind of 'contradiction' is very difficult to create. At the very least, I can't think of any possible way right now..."
