Lin Lei's gaze swept across them, and he immediately assessed their identities.
Of these two, one wore a fire-red robe with fire-red hair, his round face full of good cheer. This was a lower-level Fire System High God named Bretel. The other appeared rather sturdily built, about the same height as Lin Lei. He wore a gray robe with messy short hair — this was a lower-level Earth System High God named Manu.
"Bretel, Manu." Lin Lei smiled faintly. "What a coincidence running into you two here. I wonder what brings you."
The Fire System High God Bretel and Manu exchanged a glance. Then Bretel smiled with a humble expression and transmitted his voice: "Lord Lin Lei, Manu and I have come here precisely to search for a Chief God emissary. This Brell is someone we had already selected long ago. We've come this time to make him our Chief God emissary. We would appreciate Lord Lin Lei's help."
Lin Lei's brow furrowed.
Not every High God's quota of Chief God emissaries was full. For instance, Qing Huo had only one Chief God emissary, Puslo, with the other position still unfilled.
Because of this planar war, the few High Gods whose emissary slots were not yet full had begun selecting Chief God emissaries to fill the vacancies.
"Hmph." Lin Lei's expression darkened involuntarily.
Bretel and Manu both felt a slight jolt of alarm in their hearts. After all, Lin Lei was a terrifying existence who had surpassed the Lightning Chief Sovereign and the Light Chief Sovereign — only the four Chief Sovereigns of Rules could surpass Lin Lei. The two of them, as lower-level High Gods, were simply incomparable to Lin Lei.
"Bretel, I said we should give up, but you insisted on coming," Manu transmitted voicelessly.
"Don't worry. As long as we're polite, Lin Lei wouldn't dare make a move against us. That would be a violation of the agreement," the Fire System High God Bretel transmitted back. Then Bretel turned to Lin Lei with a beaming smile and said, "Lord Lin Lei, in the Earth Plane, Brell isn't the only one with a powerful physical body. You could easily choose someone else, Lord Lin Lei."
Lin Lei's cold gaze swept over Bretel and Manu.
Before Lin Lei could speak, Bei Bei beside him had grown angry and shouted: "My boss chose this Chief God emissary — what right do you two have to snatch him away?"
"Shut your mouth!" Manu barked angrily, casting a cold glance at Bei Bei.
The two of them feared Lin Lei, but they didn't hold a Highgod like Bei Bei in any regard. In the eyes of High Gods, a Highgod was nothing more than an ant. And now this ant dared to shout at them? If Lin Lei hadn't been standing right there, the two of them would probably have killed Bei Bei on the spot.
"I think it's you two who should shut your mouths," Lin Lei said in a low voice.
Manu and Bretel's expressions shifted slightly.
"Lord Lin Lei, how about this — we let Brell choose for himself?" Bretel shamelessly pressed on, and without waiting for Lin Lei's reaction, he turned to Brell and smiled. "Brell, would you be willing to become a Chief God emissary under my command? I can bestow upon you a Chief God Artifact."
Brell was utterly bewildered.
"What's going on today? Why are High Gods fighting over making me their Chief God emissary?" Brell couldn't understand.
Forget about him understanding — even Lin Lei didn't understand.
"What's wrong with these two?" Lin Lei wondered internally. "A Chief God emissary — there's no shortage of seven-star-level experts in the Earth Plane who are no worse than Brell. They could easily find someone else. Why provoke me over this Brell? What's the real reason behind this?"
Because of his confusion, Lin Lei didn't immediately drive the two High Gods away. Instead, he wanted to see what was really going on.
"I..." Brell hesitated.
Becoming Lin Lei's Chief God emissary involved an extremely dangerous trial.
But this newly appeared High God hadn't mentioned any trial. Naturally, Brell was hesitant.
"Bretel, don't you need to send him into the planar battlefield?" Lin Lei asked coldly.
The Fire System High God Bretel smiled casually. "To become a Chief God emissary, one naturally must undergo a trial."
Brell glanced at the Fire System High God Bretel before him and thought with alarm: "This Fire System High God — he didn't mention it just now. He was probably waiting until I agreed before bringing up the planar battlefield. His methods are hardly honorable." Without a moment's hesitation, Brell said respectfully: "I'm sorry, but I have already agreed to this High God."
Lin Lei smiled.
Bretel and Manu exchanged another glance.
"I'd like to see what else these two have to say," Lin Lei thought, genuinely curious now. What could possibly drive these two to insist on taking Brell, even at the risk of offending Lin Lei?
A single Chief God emissary? Lin Lei didn't buy it.
Even if one were short a Chief God emissary, that was no reason to offend a powerful Chief Sovereign.
Were these High Gods idiots? Out of their minds? That was impossible.
So what was the real reason?
"Lord Lin Lei," Bretel said with a slight bow, transmitting his voice. "Making Brell a Chief God emissary — this is an order from the Fate Chief Sovereign, Lord Aufu. We two are merely following orders and have no choice in the matter. I humbly ask Lord Lin Lei to lend us your assistance."
Lin Lei was taken aback.
The Fate Chief Sovereign, Aufu?
Lin Lei knew that under each of the four Chief Sovereigns of Rules, a number of High Gods had gathered. The Destruction Chief Sovereign, for example, had many High Gods loyal to his side — even High Gods of other law systems had entered the Underworld, effectively standing with the Destruction Chief Sovereign.
After all, the High Gods knew that the four Chief Sovereigns were the strongest, and so naturally they chose to align with the powerful.
The Fate Chief Sovereign was the most unfathomable of all, and indeed quite a few High Gods followed his commands. The two before him were a prime example! Even the Light Chief Sovereign, Augustus, could not be said to be completely subordinate to the Fate Chief Sovereign — but he was still essentially on the Fate Chief Sovereign's side.
"Haha, Lord Aufu has the Twelve-Winged Divine Angel Legion — why would he care about one or two emissaries?" Lin Lei transmitted back with a faint smile.
"We cannot fathom Lord Aufu's thoughts," Bretel and Manu both said respectfully. Bretel continued, transmitting: "Lord Aufu gave us orders to come here and find someone named 'Brell' to serve as a Chief God emissary. Though Lord Aufu didn't say we absolutely must succeed, we certainly can't let him down... So we ask Lord Lin Lei to please help us."
Lin Lei was beginning to understand.
