Chapter Twenty-Five: Innate Divine Ability

January 17, 2020 · 6 min read · 1,120 words

After sixty-one years in this plane battlefield, Lin Lei had come to deeply appreciate the dangers it held. Relying solely on his own strength to earn enough military merit while keeping himself alive — the difficulty was simply too great. Now, having joined Rezkin's hunting team, Lin Lei felt a wave of relief.

"That's more like it! Let's go, we need to find a place to rest first," Rezkin said with a grin.

The tower-like giant standing beside Rezkin said nothing at all, simply following along.

"Rezkin — he was already a Purgatory Commander ages ago, and he managed to drive off that菲尔德," Lin Lei thought, thoroughly convinced of Rezkin's strength. "And according to that book Belut gave me, Rezkin was described as one of the top five among all the Purgatory Commanders."

Rezkin was extremely well-known.

His own strength was formidable, and on top of that, his mother was a Sovereign!

"Boss, things are going to be easier for us now. We should be able to earn military merit a lot more easily," Bei Bei said with a grin, flipping his hand to produce a red fruit and taking a vigorous bite. The giant beside Rezkin sniffed the air, turned to look at Bei Bei, and immediately broke into a smile. "You're Bei Bei, right? That fruit looks pretty tasty. Give me one, why don't you?"

"Here you go." Bei Bei was generous about it, flipping his hand again to produce another fruit and tossing it to Rezkin.

Rezkin's eyes lit up. He caught it and immediately took a bite, nodding approvingly. "Crisp and delicious. Really hits the spot. Thanks, brother." As he spoke, Rezkin reached out his hand, and a purple fruit appeared in it. "This is my favorite — it's only found in the Life Highplane. Give it a try."

Bei Bei and Rezkin, these two childlike personalities, hit it off almost instantly.

Lin Lei smiled faintly and followed along as they set out, while the tower-like giant trailed behind in silence.

"Hey, Rezkin, I'm not bragging or anything, but my innate divine ability — heh heh." Bei Bei was already boasting.

"You're strong, but I'm no pushover either," Rezkin said confidently. "But Bei Bei, I have to warn you — whatever you do, don't use that innate divine ability on me. I heard from my mother that you God-Devouring Mice have an innate ability that simply defies heaven. Unless you have a Sovereign-grade soul defense artifact or have reached the Great Perfection, you simply can't withstand it."

"Don't worry," Bei Bei said with a mischievous grin. "We're on the same team, aren't we?"

Lin Lei listened with interest. It seemed Rezkin was somewhat afraid of Bei Bei's innate divine ability.

Rezkin took a bite of the fruit and said resignedly, "Here I am, Rezkin — soul attacks are my specialty. I can go toe to toe with even a Great Perfection Highgod in soul combat without flinching. But your 'God Devouring,' Bei Bei — there's nothing I can do about it. That ability of yours is absolutely the strongest soul attack among all Highgods!"

Lin Lei smiled too. Rezkin's words made perfect sense.

Bei Bei's ability — devouring divine sparks and annihilating souls — was indeed the most powerful soul attack possible.

"According to my mother, when it comes to beast-type innate divine abilities, the truly terrifying ones — Bei Bei, you God-Devouring Mice are definitely in that category. And back in the day, the Four Great Divine Beasts — the Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, and the others — their innate abilities were equally monstrous. The Life Tree in the Life Highplane is also absurdly powerful… and the Netherworld Tree in the Underworld, and… well, most of those outrageously powerful divine beasts have already become Sovereigns," Rezkin remarked with admiration.

Divine beasts were ranked in tiers.

The God-Devouring Mouse sat at the very pinnacle, and the Netherworld Tree was in that same class. These divine beasts' innate abilities all defied the natural order.

"Hey, tell me more about how powerful those divine beasts are!" Bei Bei said excitedly.

Lin Lei was equally interested.

Though they were walking across the plane battlefield, the four of them were quite relaxed. Lin Lei and the tower-like giant both kept watch on their surroundings, but clearly no one was foolish enough to mess with the four of them.

"In terms of offensive power, the 'White Tiger' of the Four Great Divine Beasts had an innate ability even stronger than your 'God Devouring,'" Rezkin said with a sigh. "My mother told me that when the Four Great Divine Beasts fought together, combining all four of their innate abilities — it was beyond absurd. Among the Sovereigns, they were an incredibly powerful group. Unfortunately, they've all fallen now. What a pity."

Lin Lei was stunned.

The White Tiger's innate divine ability — stronger than 'God Devouring'? Too bad he would never get to see it for himself. After all, none of the descendants of the Four Great Divine Beasts were true divine beasts. They only carried fragments of the bloodline. Even their innate abilities were developed through ancestral shrine baptises, and their power was far below that of their forebears.

"Even stronger than my God Devouring Mouse?" Bei Bei muttered, looking disgruntled.

Rezkin laughed. "There are seventy-seven Sovereigns, and some of them are divine beasts! And these divine beasts are almost all one of a kind. You've never seen them in action. Even when they fight normally, they don't need to use their innate abilities at all. Of course you don't know how terrifying their abilities really are. But… when the Four Great Divine Beasts combined their four innate abilities, it was the strongest divine ability — of that, there's no doubt."

As they chatted freely, a low hill came into view ahead.

"A Hong, make us a cave," Rezkin said.

"Yes." The giant finally spoke.

Lin Lei couldn't help but look over. The silent giant walked up to the hillside — the hill was only a few hundred meters tall — and placed his fan-like right palm against the rock face. Immediately, the entire wall of stone began to ripple and undulate like flowing water, the rock within shifting outward in a slow, fluid current.

In the blink of an eye…

A perfectly square cave had formed. There were even carved patterns decorating the interior walls.

"What kind of move is that?!" Lin Lei and Bei Bei were dumbstruck.

"Don't be so shocked," Rezkin said with a smug smile, then strode inside. The giant followed him into the cave.

"Another mysterious and powerful one," Lin Lei thought with admiration. He hadn't found even a mention of this giant in Belut's book.
