Chapter: Desire

January 17, 2020 · 6 min read · 1,130 words

The Planar War. Just listening to the Sovereign of Death's account, Lin Lei knew it was incredibly dangerous. Yet he still chose to go! After all, apart from the Sovereign of Death, no other Chief God could help him!

"Whether or not you agree to go has nothing to do with me." The Sovereign of Death looked down at Lin Lei. "Anyone who represents my Underworld and achieves merit will be rewarded. No exceptions! I am following the rules, not doing this for you — I merely told you about this method."

Lin Lei took a deep breath.

"Chief God, how can I reach the Planar Battlefield?" Lin Lei looked up and asked.

The Sovereign of Death said indifferently, "Whether it's the 'Purgatory' of the Inferno or the 'Nine Abyss Domain' of the Underworld, both have a 'Spatial Gate' that leads directly to the Planar Battlefield. The Planar Battlefield connects to the seven great divine planes and the four supreme highplanes. Your fastest option right now is to go to the Underworld's Nine Abyss Domain. Through the Spatial Gate, you can reach the Planar Battlefield!"

Lin Lei frowned.

Nine Abyss Domain?

The book on Underworld geography that Beirut had given him made no mention of the Nine Abyss Domain. In truth, it was the same with the Inferno's geographical texts — they didn't describe the 'Purgatory' either.

"Chief God, about the Nine Abyss Domain..." Lin Lei couldn't help but speak up.

"Hmph." The Sovereign of Death waved a hand.

Immediately, a very thin book emitting black light flew down from above, stopping before Lin Lei. The Sovereign of Death looked down at him and said, "Since you have the courage to go to the Planar Battlefield, then I'm rather curious to see... whether you, Lin Lei, kill a few Commanders and come out alive, or whether you're killed by other Commanders who claim the reward!"

Yet Lin Lei felt no anger at all. He accepted the book and bowed slightly. "Thank you, Chief God."

Lin Lei immediately began leafing through the book. It was very thin, only a dozen or so pages. With his memory, a single glance was all it took — within a few seconds, the contents of every page were committed to his mind.

"The Nine Abyss Domain is deep within the Nethersea?" Lin Lei looked up at the Sovereign of Death.

It was too far!

To reach the Nine Abyss Domain, one first had to travel all the way to the edge of the Underworld continent, then enter the Nethersea and journey to its far depths. If he traveled by Metallic Lifeform, it would take an estimated two to three centuries. That was far too long, and... if he arrived only to find the Planar War already over, that was something he could not accept.

"Chief God, how long does the Planar War last?" Lin Lei asked quickly.

The Sovereign of Death said indifferently, "Each Planar War lasts a full thousand years! This war between the Light Divine Plane and the Darkness Divine Plane has been going on for nearly a hundred years. There are still nine hundred years remaining. You have plenty of time to get there!"

Plenty of time?

Though the war's duration was sufficient, Lin Lei was unwilling to waste too much time. The longer it took, the greater the likelihood that his father and brothers would die. Moreover, as time passed, the weaker Commanders in the Planar War would likely be killed off early, and by the time he arrived, those Commanders still alive would most likely be the extremely powerful ones.

Beirut, Dannington, Reisjing, Mo Si...

These names flashed through Lin Lei's mind!

"Chief God, then Bei Bei and I will set out now." Lin Lei bowed.

Bei Bei could only suppress his displeasure and bow as well.

"Go." The Sovereign of Death said indifferently. "However, I suggest you first become a Nine Abyss Lord in the Nine Abyss Domain. That will be very helpful for your entry into the Planar Battlefield. Arthis, guide Lin Lei and his companion and see them off from Nether Mountain!"

"Yes, Chief God!" Arthis bowed.

Become a Nine Abyss Lord first, then enter the Planar Battlefield? Lin Lei was somewhat puzzled.

But Lin Lei didn't press further. He exchanged a glance with Bei Bei and Borelei, then strode out of the Chief God's palace and flew off under Arthis's guidance.

"Master, that Lin Lei seems quite confident. It looks like he doesn't know much about the Planar War." At that moment, the silver snake Yinnawei wore a broad smile, clearly delighted. Yinnawei understood all too well how brutal the Planar War was — Commanders fighting against each other, and it was a war! Not one-on-one duels!

Sometimes, several Commanders from the same side would even gang up on a single enemy Commander!

"Thank you, Master." The silver snake Yinnawei smiled and bowed. She believed the Sovereign of Death's arrangement was sending Lin Lei and his companion to their deaths — a form of vengeance on her behalf.

"Thank you, Master." The golden snake and her nine children all bowed in gratitude.

The Sovereign of Death cast them an indifferent, sidelong glance. "That's enough. You may withdraw. Borelei!"

Borelei's eyes immediately lit up, and he hurried to the center of the great hall. The Sovereign of Death was finally going to make him a Chief God's Emissary.

Below Nether Mountain.

Lin Lei, Bei Bei, and Arthis parted ways.

"Lin Lei, before you leave, I must tell you something." Arthis said gravely. "You may not be aware, but the Chief Gods have an agreement: they may bestow upon their Emissaries or their children at most one Chief God Artifact! No matter which Chief God's Emissary it is, they can receive at most one Chief God Artifact."

"One?" Bei Bei frowned.

Lin Lei was stunned. "One?"

Yes, that was indeed the case!

Like the Azure Dragon patriarch Gaisen, who possessed only a Soul Defense Chief God Artifact. Like the Grand Elder Gaia, who also had only a Defense Chief God Artifact fused with her scales — each had only one. Given how much the Chief God Azure Dragon cared for his children, why would he give each only one? Now Lin Lei somewhat understood.

"Because the Chief Gods don't want too great an imbalance among Highgods," Arthis continued. "Imagine if a single Highgod possessed a Defense Chief God Artifact fused with their body, a Soul Defense Chief God Artifact, and an Offensive Chief God Artifact. Tell me... such a Highgod, even if their own comprehension was weak, wouldn't they be terrifying?"

Lin Lei was stunned.

Physical defense and soul defense both being Chief God Artifacts, plus an Offensive Chief God Artifact! Such a person would indeed be monstrous!
